The people that are pixelpeeping and reading those reviews mostly are not the ones producing stunning images at all. I know of hundreds of photographers shooting MF digital and making a good living out of it. Only one of them is on fora..., all the others simply use their camera to create images. Pixel peeping and nagging about the very best lens or ccd is so much easier than creating great images.  ;D

Get down from your pedestals, some of you.

I haven't a clue whether Mr Lloyd is right or wrong and frankly could care less. I can't help feeling that if all this pixel-peeking angst was to be channelled directly into making images then there would be a fair few better photographers about.

The thought of paying someone for their opinion on cameras and lenses is in my less than humble opinion just ludicrous. If I want an opinion on a camera or lens I'll beg, borrow, rent or buy it and trust in my own opinion.

That's the advantage of being an image maker rather than a banker.

The disadvantage, well, not being able to spend "100 grand on Hasselblad".

Greg

Let me get this straight.  Those of us who legitimately disagree with a reviewer who has spent a total of one hour with a camera makes us "religiously biased".  And just who exactly is living on a pedestal?  Just because we choose to read forums to hear the experiences of great photographers means we only have time for that and none for actually taking pictures or creating art, as some say.  Those of us who had "actually read them attentively" would of course have agreed with him.

Believe me, I have serious issues with Hasselblad from time to time, but thankfully they address most very attentively and well.  And there are issues they will never address for who knows what reason.

Personally, I hate to feel as if I am being lectured, put down, or treated as less than a serious photographer.  So come on guys, let us grow up and respect each other for our opinions.  We cannot all agree on everything.  And as one wag said, "I wouldn't want everyone to like everything I like or they would all want my wife."  'Nuf said.

I take all 'image makers' seriously, the fact is some of my favourite photographers have never earned so much as a bean from their work.

What I can't take seriously is the obsessive compulsive disorder concerning equipment that is fed by the likes of Mr Lloyd as well as dealers and manufacturers.

I for one like it when disciplined, meticulous, open, honest specialists go through all that pain and contrast and compare equipment. I can read about it, or not, take what I need and then do my own research. All very cheap (compared to my time) and way broader than I could ever hope to do any search/comparison. And hey, how would I ever have found out about Coastal Optics otherwise? Or maxmax for BW and IR conversions?
What I cannot take seriously is people that get religiously excited about it. Read it, don't read it, your choice. BUT if you do start criticising it, be so kind and really read it first (needs subscription, too bad). Even LuLa is only half as bad as people make it here, though content wise it becomes more and more useless.
With respect to pixel peeping, well, if it ain't the pixels at all, why bother buying so many of them then? If it ain't about the MTF hitting the CCD, why bother about the HC 50 II or HC 120 II then? Yes it's its the whole system, yes, Hassi is great combo from click to TIFF, but dude, most of the ticket to a technically good shot precisely IS how the light rays (Monday to Wednesday) and Photons (Thursday to Saturday) hit those photo sites. Ask the landscape shooters with their technical cameras. The margins for error have become incredibly small.

PS: Surely you just go to the next dealer and buy a car with no research, or test drive each for several weeks, right?

I haven't.

I don't have to, I see them day in and day out producing their bland, contrived, clichéd, cloned, sharp shite. Too busy following others and looking at pixels to actually see anything.

"dude" - actually pal I'm not your dude - but I'll let it go - I'd be fascinated to peruse the advantages you've gained from your own pixel-peeping in the form of your own images. Care to share?

Actually, the waste of time pixel peeping thing made me think

As Lloyd chambers once said when reading such forums as this ... waste of time, keeping him from doing work and shooting.

In this respect ... hasta la vista
