dim lcd in PME45

I received a physically nice and functional PME45. The only issue for me is that the lcd screen is way too dim for me to see it with bright ambient light! According to the manual, it should automatically adjust brightness according to ambient light level. Is there possibly something I am not doing correctly? The battery is fresh and the contacts are like new.
