With the arrival of the X2D and its built-in stabilization system (IBIS), I have already read that it is important to disable this system if you use a tripod.

Given that we've apparently lost the ability to use a cable release, I wonder if it might not end up being "best practice" to leave IBIS on (at least when actually shooting) to reduce any shake from pressing the shutter release.

I am disappointed that the FL for IBIS only goes up to 499mm. This means I can't use it to handhold the Apotessar with a 2x converter.  ;)

I'drather use Phocus Mobile 2 instead of a cable when using a tripod.

Probably because above 499mm IBIS does not make sense any longer :).

Since I have a "first edition" X1D, I haven't had the opportunity to use Phocus 2 yet, so I might end up agreeing with you. It still seems like an awful lot to fiddle with when all you want to do is trip the shutter when the wind stops blowing. I will, however, keep an open mind.

Wonderfull gallery, great job with this nonsense equipment combination :-)
Could you tell us more about the way the 16-35 handles the MF size sensor ? best at which focal length and aperture, etc ?

Hi Angy -

Thx for your comment.
As I said before,
this combo works more than well (may be for some not as well as Hasselblad prime lenses, but what is better, what is worst huh  ;) ).
Although... I really advise you to read Vieri's review which in its time did a very good job of comparison.
If I remember correctly, he even said that Canon's Zoom lens beat Hasselblad's prime lens at certain apertures.

And if you don't want to read all his review just jump directly to the conclusions at the bottom of the page.

Hope it will answer your questions.
Let me know if you have a particular question.

Thanks Dimitri,
This review answers petty all of my questions.
This lens could be a good option indeed.
It's size with adapter is quite huge though.

"... It's size with adapter is quite huge though..."  —>   Personally, I find it OK.

Some practical things (in use):

  • At 19mm the vignetting starts to feel quite strong (if you crop the shot in 3:2 you can eliminate this vignetting, in 4:3 it will be more tricky).
  • My camera often makes "error -85" when coupled with Canon zoom (via the TechArt ring). Error -85 = I can't finish the exposure, please restart the camera. Is it the zoom and/or the TechArt adaptor that creates this error I don't know...
  • It seems that this combo drains the battery when it remains attached to the camera (and the camera is turned off). After one week a fully charged battery is empty!

If you still have questions let me know.

For me it's complete nonsense to use a medium format digital camera with only a FF zoom.

...

I explained the reasons behind this choice that you qualified as "nonsense".
And for Dicky, here are a couple of results with the X1DII of course (not the most dusty)  —>   https://tinyurl.com/bdehdr3m

Theres quite a few forum members on here,
Whom talk-the-talk, walk-the-walk, and we have never yet seen any of their creative-works!

Very politely and respectfully I suggest to those in question ....
Go easy on the "slagging" of others, until you have either found the "self-confidence and /or "balls" to post a link to your creative-works 8)

Recently, received an email, from another photographer with some absolutely "f**king awful" and "very badly lit" sample images to view.
Reading between the lines, it was explained to me that Im a complete c**t for not using white-backgrounds and not back-lighting jewellery!
Thats fine too, always youve got to be able to take a "professional-slagging" always rather amusing from someone with more ego than talent.

Best wishes 8)

why more and more people buy MF and insist running them with FF glas that's not made for this use ?

If one don't want to use native lenses there are so much second market MF lenses available wich much better results on the X system than FF lenses.

Bluetooth remote exists, it's your phone.
Really no fiddling pairing phone and X camera, it works much better than my Nikon camera.

Hasselblad says clearly in the manual that ibis has to be off on tripod.

Thank you for the suggestion, I will use it when delayed shutter does not work.
IMO, a phone is more cumbersome to handle in the field (unlock, start app, hold it with two hands, ...). A small device on a lanyard is more convenient.
