Filename leaving Phocus 1.0?

Sorry to be such a PIA.

Phocus allows me to build a filename for each image file that is perfect for my workflow (i.e. 080601-1001A.fff).

The next step is for Phocus to make a .dng of that file to be Exported to my shoot folder and from there, Imported into Lightroom.

I can't find an option in the Export that doesn't rebuild the filename. I just want the filename AS-IS with a .dng extension.

I thought I'd found it as "Untitled AS-IS", but that produces a filename "Filename As-Is.dng" That is of no value.

No PIA!

Make a name preset just called 'Name'!

;-)

PS.  Why bother going into Lightroom?

Chris Crumley

Jo,

I'm all for presets. Had to get the thing to work first. You think I can make a preset called "Name?" :-)

Lightroom is my database (138,000 images on six of twelve 750gb HDs on the system), editor, Client Proof maker, keyword and caption repository, etc.. I also work three platforms (H2/39CFH for dry commercial work, MkII for underwater, MkIII for action above water), so they all come together nicely in Lightroom (not perfect yet, but getting better).

When there is a select from an H2 shoot, I may go back and process the RAW in FC (soon Phocus?) for a higher quality PSD export to post production. Most of the time, DNGs work fine.

Glad you fixed it!

Understood about Lightroom - must be hard with different platforms.

Got the H2 underwater yet?

Jo,

Best I can tell, there are two H2s underwater. One in Europe and one in the US. I've been tempted, but we have a saying about underwater housing.... it isn't a question of "if" they're going to leak, it's "when."

The multi-platform thing works very well and there is lots of backup.

I'm a little antsy about putting a $35k back, 6k body and $2k lens underwater in salt water. I have a housed RZ67 and have had a multitude of housed Nikons and Canons plus at least 10 Nikonos Vs, a Nikonos RS, a Swiss-made UW SLR and some others. About half leaked at some point and a few totally flooded. I've done over 5,000 dives, only 7 without a camera, so I've seen my share of disasters and scares.

I'm going to have nightmares tonight just thinking about a flooded MFDB system.

Hi Chris
If you want the fff original filename (as is) with your dng or tiff create a name preset with "raw name" and "raw sequence"
You can see my picture included

Oliver,

Thanks, that does it.

I found that just "Job Name" in the preset causes the entire filename to export.

The last thing preventing use of Phocus is the two minute time span from clicking "Capture" until the H2/39CFH fires. Have you seen that? It happens for all captures except for the first one in a session.

Hi Chris

No it's working normally here

Just to go back to the lightroom discussion Chris - I also work with 35mm as well as MF and use lightroom as you do. Instead of going the DNG route I just output thumbnails and use those in LR. They are only usable for management obviously and I go back to FC for the final images once selected.

However, one thing that I noticed is that if you rename a .fff file (either FC or Phocus) to .tif you can import them directly into LR. You only get the thumbnail but it cuts out one step. The reason this works is that the fff file, like a lot of raw files uses the tiff file structure internally. Once they are in you could set up FC/Phocus as an external editor (like you do with PS) to edit the file 'properly', except FC won't load the file with the .tif extension.  It's a bit frustrating that this so nearly works, as it would make the workflow much easier.

Now that Aperture supports Hassleblad files I am assuming LR will be supported at some point - does anyone have any info on this (Nick..?). If it's a way off then giving Phocus the option to save/load files with a .tif extension would, whilst far from perfect, be a helpful step in the meantime....

Robert,

I used to do the same thing; making sets of JPEGs for the database piece of the workflow (at the time it was Extensis Portfolio).

However, since moving to Lightroom, I find the DNGs only a small step away from having FFFs there. They get a lot of LR tweaking because I'm an imperfect soul and I like to tweak things before they get uploaded in the LR Web Module for Client viewing.

Nick or someone said there were Adobe people visiting with the Danes while Phocus was being developed, so the Lightroom-like GUI is no surprise; nor will seeing Lightroom accepting FFF before long.
