I have an SWC/M (black). Has anyone tried the CFV II back on their SWC?

I appreciate that it should work, in theory. I would like some user experience before I commit to the 907x. The 38mm fixed lens is great on film. How does it perform on the 50c sensor.

It works exactly the same as with the film magazine, except that you can see the finished image immediately on the display. I really enjoy working with it. For the viewfinder you need a mask the size of the sensor!

The special edition came with a mask, I assume it will be included in the 'regular' edition as well.

The mask is for Hasselblad V system reflex cameras: it masks the viewfinder screen for the sensor format.

The Hasselblad SWC does not have a viewfinder screen ... It has an optical tunnel viewfinder. What you need to properly represent what the SWC will see with the CFVII 50c back is a different viewfinder because masking the OEM viewfinder will be difficult at best to do with any accuracy.

The Biogon 38mm lens on 33x44mm format nets a diagonal FoV of approximately 72°. An optical viewfinder for a 28mm lens on a 35mm camera is designed to show a diagonal FoV of approximately 75°. The optical viewfinder for a Ricoh GR1 is a little closer since the GR1 digital camera has a slightly more square (4:3 format) with a 28mm lens's FoV approximately. Either of those would work pretty nicely. It won't be precise but it will be close enough to work with.

Of course, with the CFVII 50c back, you can set the SWC lens to B and just use Live View on the LCD for ultra-precise focusing and framing. This slows you down a little bit since you have to swap between B for focusing and framing and the actual exposure required, if you want to use the lens shutter. If you use the eshutter, you can use the button on the back (or the back's remote release) to make the exposure.

I love the SWC, but I went a different way. What makes the SWC so special is the extreme field of view and the quality of the lens on the full square format. I ordered the 907x Special Edition with the XCD 21mm f/4 lens. Cropped to square, this nets just about the same FoV as the SWC; processed through Phocus or LR with the XCD 21mm lens profile, the results are neigh on to identical with what I used to get with the SWC on film.

As ramarren explained, you need the right mask as well :).

Thanks, Godfrey!

I have the 21/4 and the X1D II, so I will stick with film on the SWC. A roll of Velvia to compare with the X1D and 21/4 makes for interesting comparisons.

Hope you're still getting out riding!

I hope you're using the Phocus or LR supplied lens correction profile for the XCD 21mm. It helps correct any residual rectilinear aberration in the 21 lens and does a very good job. The 907x with this lens, cropped to square, finally realizes my desire for an all digital capture SWC. Right form factor, better viewfinder, and it's actually remarkably handy despite the lens being something of a stovepipe... LOL!

(No cycling for another week now. I had a small epigastric hernia repair done this morning, so I've got a week of healing and very light activity in front of me now. I figured that as long as the hernia was small and I'm going light on activity anyway for my shoulder, I might as well get it all done and wait it out.)

Onwards! G

I hope you recover well Godfrey from the repair and can get back to cycling when you want.

I have been using SWC/M (CF and C T*) with Phase One P30 and P25 without any problems. The only difference is that a sync cord is neede between the lens and back.
For the finder, you will laugh but I have been using Olympus VF1 finder. The brightline is near perfect for 33X44 sensor and full finder view is again excellent for 37X49 size sensor. With some practice you will get used to it without bubble level.

I've been using a Leaf Aptus 75s on my SWC with good results.  I frame with the usual optical viewfinder and know that there will be a reduction in the final POV.  Must admit it's a bit sloppy but precise compositions are not what I'm looking for with the SWC most of the time, most of the time I'm more concerned with getting the bubble level lined up. Even with the non live view, chimping allows me to correct framing.

As an update I've confirmed that the CFVii 50c works great on my SWC. This is a 1972 "C" not the later "C/M" so I was concerned as the manual says the CFV works with SWC except the first generation so I guess the "C" is second gen.
Hope this helps.
