SSD and Phocus captures

Hi!

My MBP seems to get slower all the time (when working/capturing with Phocus.) It might be that it depends on the back up system I did with automator and a USB drive. How ever, I'm thinking of getting an solid state drive to my MBP, but do you know if it is good for capturing Hasselblads large files via FW? The reason why for me would mainly be in safer storage during transport fom the shoot to my studio and so on since SSD is not that fragile. An quite small drive would do the job since I don't store files on my laptop for longer periods, it is used mainly as a monitor and some minor ps work on the field etc.

So, is SSD good for capturing via Phocus?

Waiting for the next gen of MBP's in Spring 2011, rumored to have SSD's as standard, maybe slimmer (lighter) too. That would be nice.

Ok. Thanks for your opinions. It seems like i have to try it out.

What is the problem?

I assume it is installed and not yet formatted or partitioned? You have a time machine backup made with your original drive? (this does make installing the new SSD easier).

I used Crucial and OWC  for my SSD drives. No problems whatsoever. I have used the OWC 240GB drive in a pre-unibody MBP15 and as a boot drive for my 2009MacPro. I use a 256Gb Crucial in my i7 Unibody MBP15.

Hi!

The problem is that I can't format it. When i plug it with usb housing, my MBP says that it is not comaptible, do I want to install. Then Disk utility just don't format it. At the first time the format time just kept on groving like in the link.

I have a time machine back up on a usb drive. I was thinking of an clean install, but what ever works is fine at this point ;)

I did all my installations in a different way. I simply opened the case, took out the old drive. Put the new drive in, booted the install CD (I use a Snow Leopards install CD and not the repair CD's supplied with the MBP). I opened disk utility in the boot screen of the installation disk, partioned and formatted the drive. I selected a Time Machine restore towards the SSD drive and in all cases it worked perfectly.

This was the way I tried to do it in first place, but when osx asked were to isntall, ni drive was visible in the box, so the dirve was not recognized.

What drives are you using and what version of MBP?

I have one pre-unibody model (early 2008, the one directly before the first unibody). MBP 15". This one got a 240Gb OWC SSD drive. No problems.
I have one unibody core i7 model (the latest from mid 2010) MBP15", This one I put in a 256 Crucial C330 (if I am not mistaken) SSD Drive. Also no problems.
I have one early 2009 MacPro, this also got a 240Gb OWC SSD drive. Again no problems.

At this stage in time I think I would not be buying anything else but the OWC SSD drives. The guys at OWC (www.macsales.com) actually test them on all sorts of Mac's and are really helpful. They are located in the US but I have my goods within a couple of days often sooner than companies locally.

Hi!

I just changed the drive to a Kingston also but + series. It works, its alive! :)

OK, so it might be that the drive I got was broken or the it just is not compatible. Just installed my software and so on.

Great!

Well? What do you think?

Valtteri

It seems good, but I have to wait for a real shoot and then tell what I think ;)  I use my MBP mainly to monitor shoots, but some times for minor PS work also if needed.
