Is this lens significantly sharper at A5, A4 to A3 subject sizes (typical table top) than the 100?

Someone said that 100 is the sharpest lens in Hasselblad line, and i thought that 120 is the sharpest, not sure but if we consider about the group/elements glass of the lens then that 100 will be the winner, but by tests we can know better, unfortunately i don't have 100 atm..
The 100 in not optomised for close-up or macro, so there must be a point (subject size) at which the macro is sharper.

Shot taken during our latest Jordan trip, while having a second cup of coffee in the morning out on the hotel parking area. HC120 Macro on H4D50 and built-in flash unit.

Does anyone have samples of 120mm + H1.7x?

Hi, First post and a request for your views?

I am looking to get the 120 HC Macro and current own the 50-110. Before making the investment, do you think I would get similar results to these posted here (esp the brilliant £50 note) using extension tubes on the 50 - 110.

Thanks

This should answer your question.
All of them are shot as close as possible. Same light, same camera/lens settings. You can see how much light is taken by a 26mm tube and how much brighter 50-110 #5 versus 120mm #1. I wonder if the version II of 120mm is brighter that this lens.

1) 120mm (the distance to the subject about 11cm from the front of the lens)
2) 120mm + 26mm tube (about 7cm away)
3) 50-110mm@50mm + 26mm tube (about 3cm away)
4) the right bottom corner crop of #3
5) 50-110mm@50mm + 26mm tube (focus at infinity, about 7cm away)

I don't have other extension tubes, but if you add more the lens will be like 1cm away, and taking its size into consideration, I can assume that the subject is going to be pretty hard to lit. Probably with a 52mm extension tube you can get the magnification of bare 120mm, but you will be too close to the object. Compare #5 and #3 to see how much light was lost when the lens moved from 7cm to 3cm.
Another issue, if you look at the last image, crop of 50-110 with an extension tube, you'll see that corners are pretty funny. Looks like radial zoom. And the area that is in focus is relatively small in comparison to that of 120mm.
The camera says it won't autofocus with 120mm+26mm. No idea why.

Hi Derek,
Would be nice to see the same shot with 120mm and 120mm+1.7x!
I'd like to know if it can autofocus and what is the shortest focusing distance with the combination.

I tried to shoot closeups of faces with 120mm but distortions with this focal length are to strong to my taste. So I use 150mm+26mm instead, which won't let me get too close. 120mm+1.7x could be an option.

A subject of 4-7" size would be ideal I guess, but anything close to that will do.

Thank you!

Hi Alex,

autofocus is not possible with HC120 + HC1.7! Most likely too small effective aperture.

Closest focusing distance is approximately 10 cm from front lens to subject, if lens is adjusted to 1:1 magnification ratio. Depicted area is roughly 25mm x 33mm with 39 or 50Mpix copped (marked) screen.

Udo

Thanks for the info, Udo!
No luck with autofocus :( but it's not a big issue. So, the focusing distance is about the same, but it covers 33mm instead of 48mm. I get the idea.

Thanks Derek,
I think it will serve my purpose.
