Try not to lose your lens cap

I forgot how, maybe it fell out of my pocket, but I lost the lens cap for one of my lenses. And one of the back ones are damaged in that one of the plastic pieces that helps secure it when twisted was broken.

Contacted Hasselblad support and they're telling me $70-$100.

Honestly, these are not worth that for me. The lens are in their own padded section, so I'm not worried about dirt and everything scratching them since I've been surviving a few months without it so far.

Sorry 21mm, maybe I'll find your cap somewhere randomly, but you're gonna hafta go commando for the forseeable future.

Once I start carrying a lens in my kit, I switch all of the Hasselblad caps to Nikon - easier for me to grasp, as well as remove.  And they are only $15 each!

Geruvah

Oh nice, I'm gonna hafta look at that. I think these are 77mm diameter

The XCD 28P front element is very far forward in the center, and its lens cap design reflects that. I'm not positive that other XCD - or other manufacturers' - lens caps would clear the glass.

Here are the XCD 21 (left) and XCD 28P lens cap (right). You can see that the thread grabbers on the sides protrude much further on the 28. Just something to try before switching out that particular cap. Mind you, it would be, IMHO, a very bad design to require a special lens cap design when the lens itself is not obviously protruding like a 14mm prime.

Since I use magnetic filters all my lenses now use magnetic filter caps. Still expensive but nothing like the HB caps, which are safely in the box, unused. And since all my caps are the same size(s) (77mm for XCD and 72mm for XCDV) I can just carry a spare magnetic cap when I travel for when I lose one (I'm looking at you Venice!!).

Also the new caps are REALLY heavy. What's with making a lighter lens system and just adding useless grams? So, the new back caps are gone as well replaced by a set of XCD caps which are lighter and easier to get off.

Oh, I just leave the 28P mounted with the lens cap off. The hood does a good enough job protecting the lens. Agree about the silly weight of lens front and back caps.

At least with the Kase Revolution magnetic filter system that I recently started using, the magnetic lens caps are VERY difficult to remove separately if I have a ND filter or a UV filter mounted as well. When I remove the lens cap, the filter invariably comes off as well.

Agreed. People used to complain the magnets were too weak and they've over compensated. Actually, that's why I have a lens cap on the uni bridge in Venice.. I reefed it off because the magnets were so strong and didn't have a good grip on it. I always have a spare so it's never mission critical.

Again, agreed but I don't do this. With the X2D I'm trying to have a camera/lens and then two lenses in a very small hip pack. Currently the smallest of the Wandred hip/sling bags. It works really well but I'd either need to reverse the caps, which I hate doing or use a deeper bag to be able to have the hood in place. So, I've currently got them in their boxes and I'm using the Magnetic caps which are reasonably quick to get on and off and go into a pocket without hassle.

I should take another long look at using the hoods though.

I have the old not-so-strong-magnet caps, but I just don't use the filters that much (I'm too lazy). The 28P is compact enough that, even with the hood mounted, it's a small package. Before getting the 28P, I'd go out with a 21-45-90 setup, but I'm trying to get used to the 28's FoV, so I'm just carrying it alone for a while.

I've purchased some original XCD front and rear spare caps (one broke as a lens fell down) from my Hasselblad OD in Switzerland, and just payd a regular price not far away from other brands prices !

I think the slightly protruding front element is protected (at least from a flat surface like the bottom of a lens cap) by the raised truncated cone shape of the front face of the lens. Also, the 72mm cap for the 28P is presumably identical to the one supplied with the previously released 38V and 55V (I don't have those lenses) so it is probably not likely to have been designed with the front element of the 28P in mind.

I switched all my lenses to this type of cup and it works really good. It has plastic plate inside near the glass.

Could you tell me which model?

I got Sigma lens caps which look much nicer than other brands (nothing protruding)and work well even with the 28P and hood attached.
I leave the Hasselblad caps at home because of weight and replacement costs and I found some plastic rear caps identical to the original ones on EBay.
It is strange that Hasselblad designed such expensive front and rear caps for the newer lenses, looking to me more like luxury objects than functional designs
