Got the KIPON adapter and attached an 1957 Leica M Summicron just for fun.
Not bad at all. Vignetting is less then expected
Attention: this is the full 50mp image, no cropping at all!
Need to fetch some other Leica glass from my friends and will post some more info soon
Cheers
John

Hey that is cool, does it cover the whole sensor or did you have to crop the image? quality looks good, how is it compare to M body ?
No crop. Image is full size.
I was also surprised to find out that the vignetting was not that dramatic.
The X1D images give you much more reserve when you want to crop your image.
X1D skin colors are better then Leica for sure.

Where did you got your adapter from?
I wan to try my Summilux 50mm apsh ;D
Summilux 50mm ASPH will be very good on the X1D.
I have seen lux+X1D pics and they were great (better then Noctilux)
I got it from Ebay, selling from China: SH_PHOTO1
180 USD
If you need a link, let me know by pm.
Good luck
John
I ordered mine Monday. Still sitting somewhere in China. Good news you got yours so fast.
Are the photos 50MP and the RAW files still about 110MB?
When using the X1D with Leica M glass, the original 3FR files remain indeed 110 MB, so there is no cropping inside the camera done.
Once imported into LR, a DNG of 67 MB is created with its original size of 8272x6200 pixels

Gorgeous bokeh ! Buttery smooth.
Did not know this adapter existed.
Does it focus throughout the range of the lens?

Yes it does.
I have discovered that the battery life of the X1D increases significantly when using the MF M lenses.
About 100 shots and the battery is still 80% full.
So the native AF lenses must be consuming a significant volume of electricity.

Just ordered mine. Figured for the cost, well worth trying my M lenses on the X1d. Heck, if works as well or better than on my M, will be time to say good bye to my M which is the 246. We shall see...
On august 12 2016 I wondered if some third party manufacturer could make an adaptor for M lenses. Nick T answered one would still need a central shutter because of a missing plane shutter. How is this issue resolved with this new adapter?
The latest X1D firmware supports electronic shutter.

Great news. Thanks. I note that Kipon also has a "Hasselblad to X1D adapter." Wonder if this is for Hassy Zeiss lenses? If so, I would rather buy a used 120 Zeiss lens and the Kipon adapter than spend $4500 on the XCD 120. I feel confident that the XCD 120 will be a better lens overall, but, truth be told, the Zeiss 120 is still a marvel of a lens.
If B&H has started shipping, I better make up my mind quickly.

Yes it is the V-Adapter for Carl Zeiss lenses. You should also consider the Leica R Apo-Macro-Elmarit 100mm as alternative for the XCD 120. Very compact lens and covers enough image circle for the 33x44 sensor (about 60mm diagonal as compared to the 55mm needed). Some people say it is still the best macro lens around. And the owner of Kipon told me that the R-X1D Adapter is in the making and coming soon.
I would be interested to put zeiss nikon ZF2 on the X1D. Maybe Kippon will one day make an adapter.

Thanks John, I wonder what VC lenses like 12,15mm are like!
I think ability to use non Hasselblad lenses will push up the used X1D value.
I am looking for a well used but operationallt faultless X1D? ;).
Just got the adapter, and started some tests.
Since someone asked VC 15 does very well, cropping out the vignetting, becomes a good 14mm.
Will be doing more testing and posting results soon.

It is already possible:you can stack an existing Nik to M adapter on top of the M to X1D. In the same way you can also use lenses in almost any mount on your X1D.
Anyone tried any of the Leica wide-angle lenses?
I have an adapter on order since I have several M lenses and am anxious to try out. To be clear, do you need to use electronic shutter with M. Lenses?
It's the only shutter you'll have. X1D shutters are in the actual lens

I have tried the CV 15, the summilux 21, the elmarit 28, summilux 50, summicron 90, and macro elmar 90. All work fairly well, but roughly speaking only 80% of the picture is usable when you remove the dark corners. Rule of thumb, this means the lens will have effectively the same focal length. I have not tested all of the lenses thoroughly, but I noticed that longer focus lenses have less vignetting.
And yes, you need to use ES. I find this very convenient even hand-held unless you are shooting moving subjects. One issue, since the diaphragm is not closing and opening, there is no sound at all when a picture is taken.

I found out already;
The camera will use the Rolling Shutter available
on the sensor which has a read-out time of
approximately 300 ms. This will cause distortion
of the image if the camera or subject is moving
during the exposure. A tripod and a stationary
subject is recommended.
• ISO will be limited to 3200.
• Full image quality is not guaranteed.
• Shutter speed range is 68 minutes to 1/10000
sec.
• Flash is disabled.
• Continuous drive is disabled.
• True Exposure is disabled.

Even at small size.
I'm interested by the wide angle of Leica®
(eg. Summilux 21).

So my Kipon M/X1D adapter arrived last night. I won't post samples but here's my take:
-The 135mm and 90mm f2 have no vignetting. (maybe a touch on the 90mm)
-the 16-18-21 WATE has no vignetting at 21mm
-the 35mm Summilux, 28mm Summaron have visible vignetting equivalent to one zoom push of the AF-D button. You can see that it removes just a but of the frame and I'd say we have 80% usable frame giving roughly a 40mp capture
-the 0.95 Noctilux has the most vignetting equivalent to 2 zoom-ins of the AF-D button, bringing it back to a 50mm capture at about 30mp
It's really nice shooting at wide apertures - indoors in dim light you can shoot at 1.4 or 0.95 and have relatively high shutter speeds of 1/250 and low ISO. This is really nice to have.
The Electronic shutter has too slow a scan rate and some types of lighting will create severe banding across the frame looking like dark and light horizontal bars at equivalent spacing. Turning off the guilty lights solves it, as does shooting, in several cases, at 100 iso.
Basically M lenses are extremely usable on the X1D, better IMHO using them on the SL. It's easy to focus and using wide apertures gives even more bokeh than the same aperture on an M10 or SL.
i set my C1 dial setting to A priority, Electronic shutter and the DOF button to be zoom. Very easy to press the DOF button with my pinky, zoom 100% and manually focus. the EVF, while, not the SL EVF is very capable in letting you nail focus.
The M lenses are much easier to focus manually than the X lenses as you know instinctively where you need to turn the focus, the throw is much shorter and quicker, whereas with the X lenses, you have no idea where you are focussed and have to turn back and forth to find focus.
My M lenses are now back in operation with the X1D! Very happy.
Got mine in the mail today. So far just some quick shots taken with my M lenses, all older vintage, 35mm Summicron v4, 35mm Summilux, 50mm Summicron, and F1.0 Noctilux. Not bad at all. Will need to give it more time and practice. And feels better in the hands than my M, actually. But my first impressions are my M 246 does a bit better with these lenses. Only a side by side shot comparison will satisfy that curiosity. But being able to use these lenses now for color on the X1d, am happy with that. More choices.
Wanted to add, it was extremely hard to take the Kipon adapter off after trying a few M lenses. So much so, doubt will use it much. If anyone has a good way to improve this, please share.
The thing came with zero instructions, btw. I put the adapter on first, then the M lenses. Maybe would give more grip to put the adapter on the M lens first then put on and off the camera that way?
Shooting with the electronic shutter, no sound. Was weird. Not sure I could get used to that. This will take more experimenting before decide if worth using.
Attach the adapter on the M lens and then put it on the X1D Body.
Same procedure when removing it.
Remove adapter WITH lens from the body and then separate the adapter from the M lens.
I had absolutely no problems with this
Good luck
John

Sorry, just noticed this posting. I will be returning home on Monday and will start thorough tests of all my M lenses. Posting samples here will not give a clear idea of the quality, maybe I will put some representative samples on dropbox and will let you know.

I will be testing the 21 mm today as soon as I get the opportunity for a nice pict. In the mean time attached a pict with the VC 15mm 3rd generation, cropped 90% so effectively focal length is 13.5 mm. Some vignetting, but this lens (at least the sample I have) is tack sharp. Picture processed with Capture One.
Here is another shot with Elmarit 28 mm. Picture not cropped, and one can see the level of vignetting particularly on the lower left size where all details turn gray.
Another very important thing I noticed shooting with an M adapter using ES: power consumption is very much less than with XC lenses. This implies that shutter and diaphragm draw major amount of power from the battery.

I can confirm this!
Much lower power consumption when I use my M lens on the X1D.
I cannot quantify it now but it feels like it is less then half the consumption camped to the use with a XCD AF lens with normal mechanical shutter.
Enjoy your M lenses on this great body!
John
These images just show how lens design and performance has improved since these lenses were manufactured.

Hello Dimitri
I know you were interested in the performance of the Summilux 21 using the M adapter on X1D. Attached two pictures taken this afternoon. No cropping, hand-held. Cropping out the vignetting, I expect it will have a focal distance of 18 mm on the x1d.

Thank you very much, asfeir. It works perfectly. Thank you very much indeed.
Hello -
I just bought this ring adaptor to be able to mount a Leica lenses on the X1D.
I mounted it this evening but the camera says "No lens detected!" :-\
I made sure that it was correctly snapped into place but even I pressed the camera release button but nothing happened and the camera always display on the screen "No lens detected!"
I tried with a Leica 6 bits coded lens, with an uncoded Leica lens and also with a uncoded Voigtlander lens (the last 10mm).
Does anyone have any what the problem is? Am I missing something?
Thank you.
- Dimitri
Absolutely! You must set the shutter to Electronic mode. Then all should be fine.
Hello hello -
W0W... thank you indeed it works :)
Enjoy your week-end guys.

Very excited to see some of my M glass on the X1d. The ZM 15/2.8 might be very fun.

To be honest, this is not a panacea...
As already said previously on this forum, it works "well" with "classic" lenses like 90, 50 may be 35.
But with "wide angle"... Hmmmm :o
I have tried it:
- with a Summilux 21 (you have a result on the previous page),
- with a Zeiss Distagon ZM 15 (you see some parts of the lens on your picture), and I don't speak about the huge magenta halo around the picture
- with a Voigtlander 10mm (you see a lot of parts of the lens on your picture),
"Plus" points:
- Your Distagon ZM 15 will become ± a 12mm, and
- the Voigtlander becomes ± a 8mm!!!
Sharpness is very impressive
(at least to me), much more than with the Leica M10
(for example), but it has a severe price
(ie. you'll have to crop the picture) ;)
- Dimitri
Yep, the tests I have done between X1d and my M(246) is am getting sharper images on the X1d using same lens. All things equal on a tripod. Very impressive. Almost good enough, with some differences in darks doing conversion to b/w, to drop my M. However, for general use, the M 246 is just a very small difference and much easier to use for Leica glass. For hand held, the silence of the electronic shutter on the X1d gives me no sensation a shot has been taken, which I don't like. Haven't updated yet to the latest X1d firmware, but if they haven't added an audible beep to the electronic shutter, would like to have it. For now, when I use Leica glass, will be on tripod on the X1d.
I can't get my self to use it. it's a nice thought, but once I use it all sort of issues start showing up. it is basically for static objects, and I mean dead still. I think HB can improve the electronic Shutter a little bit more so it can be useful. that's of course my take at it. I have the converter and couple of M lenses but not happy with the result. I wonder if anyone is using it on a professional capacity !
Idea: Unless of course someone can come up with a converter that has a mechanical (or maybe electronic ) shutter builtin.
Just for kicks, here's a shot with Noctilux-M 0.95/50 at wide open, ISO 200, 1/50 sec. This is a 5300x5300 center crop of the heavily vignetted image out of the X1D.

@ rent: I think this is a very good result from the Leica M glass. I still have a whole bunch of R-Glass, and some M-Lenses (35/50/90) which I consider to buy other adapters for. Given their relative compactness I consider this a bit more practical solution than the big Nikon glass (to carry around at least). Thanks for sharing!
