Title: XCD Portrait Lens
Post by: thehotshoeproject on May 10, 2025, 07:45:37 PM
I am looking at adding a portrait lens in addition to my 55V. Do you think it is good to buy 90V now or wait for a longer focal range, say 110+? I can wait 3-6 months if anything is rumoured to be launched.

You could probably buy a second hand XCD90 f/3.2, cheaper and better than the XCD90V. Just a little bit heavier, but not that much.

I have the 45mm f3.5 and am happy w/the speed/accuracy of its focus, I'm not a fast shooter anyway; since you've recommended the 90mm F3.2 is it about the same w/focus as the 45.

If the choice is either better or faster, I prefer better.

I don't know anything about the 45 f3.5 and can't accordingly give you any advice. The 90 f3.2 seems to me rather fast in normal light conditions, and even in low light. It's not as fast as the 55V for instance, but I haven't had any trouble with this lens.

Thanks for what you did contribute, someone who has both lenses may show up later and comment.

I have had the 90/3.2, the 90V, 120Macro & the 135TC.  Of all, the 120M was my favorite w/ 90/3.2 second.  Granted, the older XCD lenses are heavier than the V series, but since H never provides a lens roadmap, there is no way to determine what may be released in the future.  Depending upon your portrait style (head/shoulders, ¾, full body, etc), the 135 is also a contender.

From everything I've taken in and considering that I'm satisfied w/the speed/accuracy focuswise of the 45mm, I'm leaning toward the older lenses, so I'm open to the 90mm f3.2 and yes the 120mm macro would also be an option and I've looked around for that lens which doesn't seem to be anywhere.

The previous gentleman said his 90mm f3.2 doesn't give him any trouble so that's a start.  I'll take my time and take it all in and then make a choice.
