Here's how to reset an H battery if it is not holding a charge or not lasting as long as it should.
Note this works with the newer 7.2 volt batteries and not the older (9.6 v from memory) ones.
First Charge the battery fully, preferably overnight.
Then grab an H body with no battery on it and press and hold the "menu" and "flash" buttons, and while holding them down push the battery up onto the handgrip. You should then here a rapid series of beeps indicating the PMU on the battery has been reset. Now put the battery back on charge and it should improve performance.
On a side note new batteries will have a low initial capacity, cycle them through charge discharge (on the camera) a few times to get full capacity.

Hi Nick,
This Jan from The Netherlands. One question. How long must I charge the battery after I have reset and put him back on the charge.
Thanks
I would give it 12 hours after a reset.
Nick-T
THANK YOU!
I have had this problem with both of my batteries... Lasts tops 75 images!
this really works! thank you, nick. i couldn't get either of my batteries to hold a charge (one said 0%, the other 5% and they wouldn't budge from there.) but resetting them, as you noted, worked. do you know what the problem could have been in the first place. pretty new camera and batteries. could it be that i was over charging them? is it terrible to leave them on a charge for too long. anyway, thanks so much for this tip!!
slightly question...on batteries...my battery doesn't go to 100%...even with this reset, and charging overnight...more than 18 hours, it shows 95%. It holds this charge well, though, and I can't really complain.

I don't think so, the charger reverts to trickle charger once they are fully charged. I don't know why a battery would show a maximum of 95%, one of mine does it and my laptop only ever goes to 98%, I wouldn't worry about it!
I have 3 batteries. One you can reset and it beeps. The other 2 will not beep. Help please
Are they all 7.2V batteries?
Yes they are all 7.2v
Chris
Take of lens and viewfinder when you try the reset.
Hi David
That worked. Thank you
Chris
wow awesome tip cheers
;D
I forgot to reset the batteries(4) for more than a year.
They were all showing crazy percentage: 5%, 25%, 40% and 95%. After 12hrs+ recharging.
Did the reset trick with all of them and the result is; I'll not have to buy a new set of 7.2V batteries for now.
Great having the Hasselpedia to search for here at the Forum.
Time to sleep now.
Cheers
Mauro
Excellent trick, thanks.
;D
whoo hooooo, thanks Nick
You ripper
Hm...
Hy Nick-T, Hi everybody
I have a couple of older batteries I'd like to reset.
I tried the procedure described: Holding Flash & Menu buttons attach the Battery...
Nothing happens. No beep, no reset. Any idea?
Cam: H4D-50 Firmware 2.2.4/16.0.5
Cheers!
Make sure you have your lens and viewfinder off!
Yes I know, thanx!
It can be a bit tricky to do making sure the two buttons are held down as you slide the battery on.. You're not by any chance trying to do it with the older 9.6V batteries are you? They can't be reset AFAIK
Nick-T
All Batteries are 7.2 V. And I'm kind a handyman, so handling a battery and pushing some nipples at one time is not such a big thing... :D
Maybe it's the new Firmware?

Hi,
I have a maybe similar problem.
I loaded the battery with a different charger 2 times, because I needed the camera and had no right charger. It worked fine, but now the battery indicator on the camera shows 0% all the time.
Even when I charge the battery all night (with the original hasselblad charger)
Today I shot about 140 frames, with battery of 0% - as shown on the camera.
The reset, does not work for me, holding menu and flash buttons, clipping on the battery, but nothing happens.
I have H3dII-39.
What could be the problem ?
regards, Martin
Hi mMartin,
I have the exact same camera.
Did you try different sequences?
I do press the buttons first, keep holding it, than I slide the battery into position.
Worked for me.
Good luck,
Mauro
hi mauro, thanks for your tip
it worked finally, at least i heard the beeeping but the battery still shows 0%
Weird.
Try again charging the battery overnight, despite the blinking red light on the charger.
After that, repeat the reset operation.
I did struggle a few times, till I got it right.
At the end it saved me from buying 4 new batteries.
They normally last for over 200 shots each. Sometimes, 300 shots, depending on exposure length and ambient temperature.
Better luck this time mate,
Mauro
ah ok, I'll keep on trying!
Thanks Mauro!!
When, or how often, should one reset the battery chip??
I do reset my batteries when I feel it is not holding enough charge for more than 150 shots.
Upping this thread.
I recently have been having problems with one battery. Fully charged, put in camera, shoot maybe 20 frames, battery says it needs to be replaced. Charge, reset, charge. Same 20-30 frames. Repeat charge, reset, charge 2 times. Camera shows 100% battery. No shooting for a week, brought out camera today and cannot even power up camera. Does this mean its time to replace battery? Any other tricks?
Did you clean the contacts with ethanol ? it could be the problem, or maybe it's time to replace the battery !
Ok, will give the contacts some booze... ;D
forget about Bourbon. It's too sticky ahahaha ;D
I used pure ethanol at 99.9%. Hard to find and to buy but works well.
Redid the reset 2 more times, and rubbed contacts with methelated spirit for good measure. Battery shows 100%, went for shoot...at end of shoot...165 frames, battery shows 65%. the battery lives to shoot another day.
Thanks for tips.
nice !! :)
This is a great thread, very useful information for a location guy like me running 7 batteries for my camera.
Thanks to all!
I just charged two batteries. The camera indicated that one was at a 100% and the other at 5%. Does this mean that the second battery is spent or just that a reset for this particular battery is required? Thank you.
I would charge both batteries again, for at least 12hrs.
After that, a reset for both.
I also had some trouble resetting a battery on my H3DII-39 but after resetting different battery successfully, I was able to reset the problematic battery and got the 100% back from it. Right after I reset them, I re-charge them overnight just to be sure of getting them fully charged.
Performing this with no lens and no viewfinder is the trick!!!
Thank you.
damn...did i kill my H2?
just got a new (to me) H2 with battery. i have two other H batteries from my previous H3 (H3 now gone). charged one battery for four hours, checked out the H2, worked great. charged two batteries 12 hrs.
then I read this reset thread, thought i should get my batteries up to snuff:
flash/menu, insert battery, got the fast beeping, did all three
now H2 will not turn on with any of them, even after 4 hrs more charge (slow blinking light on charger)
oops...got it to work, must be a senstitive on switch as persistent push-hold did the trick
I doubt very much you have killed your batteries.. Are you pressing and holding the power button?
Nick-T
I did the reset trick as described by Nick, and then recharged my 4 batteries, but then I thought I'd check them by doing the reset thing again. A couple of them gave off the fast beeps again, so I recharged them again.
Is this to be expected - that we may have to reset them more than once? Or is something else wrong?
Richard
The H batteries are a consumable item they have a limited life span like all rechargeable batteries made by every other manufacturer on the planet.
Just because you can reset the battery to show a 100% charge does not mean that it is holding a 100% charge of a new battery.
Think of your cell phone, it has a rechargeable battery but after a few years of service you will have to replace the battery because it will no longer hold a charge.
Hi - Make sure you remove the viewfinder when doing the reset
One more thing - I believe the beeping will occur whenever you do a reset. It has nothing to do with the ability of the battery to accept a charge or the current status of the battery. BTW, anybody know when the new batteries will be available?
In my experience the batteries lasted very well and rarely fell below 80% nominal capacity when checked with a dedicated battery analyser. Keep the contacts clean, perform a reset from time to time, don't drop them, there is not much else to say.
Just one quick note, since this problem has happened to a few users lately: the new higher capacity batteries which were introduced with the H5D (and are now the only ones available) will work erratically in the H1-H4D cameras unless you upgrade the body firmware to the new version. The reset procedure will also not work unless the firmware is upgraded.
Evening all (London)
Can anyone confirm if the battery reset works for the new H6D and it's new batteries?? Also, there is no longer a 'flash' button. It is now the 'play' / display backlight button...?
Many thanks,
Michael
Hi everyone
I have the same question: does the reset still work with the H6D (100c)? and if so, how (as there is a different layout of buttons)
Thanks
Frank
Following up on my last post: now the new battery which came with the 100c does not load anymore. The LED on the charger shows that it is supposed to be fully charged (green), but when I attach it to my camera the status bar indicates 'empty'. Fortunately I still have some older batteries from my previous body, so I can manage today's shooting
Any advice?
Cheers
Frank
As far as I can tell the battery reset trick still works with the H6D by pressing and holding WB and "play" (middle button on the right) while attaching the battery. The LCD on the H6D flashes which I assume is instead of the beeps.
Getting ready for a landscape & birding photo trip to Florida next week, and thought I'd reset my three H batteries (2-1850 mAh, and 1-2900 mAh). I have an H4D/50.
Observation - When I depress & hold the flash button, then the menu button, and then insert the battery, nothing beeps on any of the three batteries. When I reverse the order (pushing down the menu button, THEN the flash button), each battery responds correctly with the beeps. Maybe it was just a glitch, but I would certainly think that the order in which the flash & menu buttons are depressed (whether simultaneously or in a succession) should make no difference in the functioning of the reset.
Question - To date, I've been resetting my fully charged battery, then shooting. Now, after reading some of these posts, it seems that after resetting, I should charge again for another 12 hours. Correct? Maybe that's why I've never seen an improvement in my batteries after resetting. Duh!
Yes the idea is to reset then give them a full charge.
What buttons to press on the H6D?
Thanks
Neil
Here is the battery reset instructions . I get them from H6D manual. Hope that helps for you all.
Follow the procedure below to synchronize.
1 Charge the battery to full capacity (charge between 4-12 hours). Remember to plug the charger into the battery first, then plug the charger into the outlet.
2 Once charged remove the battery from the charger. Do not attach the battery to the camera.
3 Without the battery attached, simultaneously press and hold the Menu and WB button on the grip. The menu button is the top button on the right with the video icon and the three white lines.
4 Continue holding these two buttons and attach the battery to the camera. If you hear a beeping sound, then the re-programming of the battery is successful, otherwise repeat steps 2 and 3 until the sound is heard.
5 Turn on the camera and confirm battery status has been reset to 100%.
6 Camera and battery are now ready for use.

One step missing
Follow all of the above but "REMOVE THE DIGITAL BACK FIRST"..............I tried the original steps above and couldn't get it to beep, I googled it and it states remove the digital back first, I did that and "Bobs your Uncle" the grip made a buzzing sound and my battery now shows full.
Thanks
Neil

Yes, yes, yes...it worked for me on a battery that has been giving me 1/2 full for months after an all night charge. Now shows 100%. Had to do the Menu/WB button pressing twice to get it to work. I bleeped rapidly several times, but only after the second try did the battery indicate 100%. Excellent. Thank you!

Is there such a trick for batteries of the X-series?
Thanks
