Title: Google Cloud Platform
Post by: NickT on March 22, 2017, 11:21:28 AM
Just wanted to draw people's attention to this if you are not aware of it.

https://cloud.google.com/ (https://cloud.google.com/)

You get a $300 credit when you sign up and it will last a year. I have uploaded about a terabyte of data and in 6 weeks have used $25 of my credit.

Most of that is based on traffic rather than storage so I expect that amount to get smaller and smaller as time goes on and I'm not constantly accessing data.

Best part for me is that my Back up software of choice (Chronosync) backs up nightly to the cloud:

Hope that's useful for someone.

Hi Nick,

Thanks, that's a great deal.

I used to use Crashplan to do online backups, which was very affordable too, at less than $10 per month for unlimited data.

However the reason I stopped using it was that my upload speed was so slow that I couldn't get the data up there fast enough, even going 24/7, so I got weeks behind.

Affordable internet here in Australia that has a decent UPLOAD speed is virtually non-existant. But the government keeps promising it is coming (National Broadband Network, basically fibre).

When it does and I can get an upload speed that can backup my daily shoots in less than an hour then I will go back to using cloud backups.

With raws and tiffs in a folder I can easily produce 5GB of data on an average shoot.

Ben

We have fibre here thank goodness. My plan is 200/200 unlimited for $150 month.

5Gig takes about 5 minutes :) Pretty much every job delivered by Dropbox now.

BTW here's a calculator if you want to work out upload times:

Wow, that's good. My broadband plan is 1/20 for about $80 per month. It's pathetic. Another photographer in my building has 400/400 but it costs $400 per month. Too much for me. Unfortunately there is literally no middle ground, it's crazy.

It is easy to be deceived by the pricing model of various cloud providers.
Google is cheap to store, but one of the most expensive when it comes to accessing the data.

This price calculator shows some alternative options:

I do not know what the deal is with Amazon Prime in the rest of the world but here in the UK you get UNLIMITED photo storage, including Hasselblad RAW images. Well worth the £79 per annum subscription and on top of that you get all the other benefits of Prime. Without the unlimited photo storage I would not subscribe to Prime.
