Title: 800 extender/repeater
Post by: Sean on September 02, 2021, 10:04:20 PM
Hi Nick
Trust all well under the volcano. I've had a scout around the forum but can't see any solutions. Did see a post from you along the lines of my query though and wonder if you can help please.
I don't shoot much now and manage perfectly well with my H4. When shooting tethered I use the two Apple adapters into a 4.5m Lindy made 800 repeater and then another 4.5m 800 to camera. I like to shoot with this 9m tether solution rather than be restricted to a single 800 at 4.5m.
My problem is that Lindy don't make that repeater any more and I want to have a solution in place in anticipation of the failure of the one I'm using. I'd rather not have a powered hub bridging the extension but perhaps that may be the only solution even if I can find one that works and doesn't cost a fortune.
Can you recommend a solution including manufacturer details either way?
With many thanks, Sean

Hi Sean
I'm still using an H4D40 connected to a 2019 5K iMac.

I use a thunderbolt 3>2 adaptor:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B019FPJDQ2/

Then I run an Apple Thunderbolt 2> FW 800 adaptor:

https://www.apple.com/nz/shop/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter

Plugged into that is a 10M FW 800 cable and connected direct to the camera:

Hope that helps.

regards

You're a star Nick. Happy days. I use the Apple thunderbolt 3>2 as opposed to your Startech version, then the same Apple 2>800. The Granite digital 10m 800 1394 is what I have been endlessly looking for without success. So grateful for your help - have a great weekend, Sean

Hi Nick,
Not so happy days unfortunately. The Granite Digital cable arrived promptly but it doesn't work. It does power the back and sometimes I can get a few captures but very quickly I get a Firewire Error (9005) on the back. I thought it might be because it does not fit tightly but even triggering remotely with no cable movement fails.
I'm told that the newer Mac OS designates power to peripherals differently and wonder if that is the case. I got no help from Apple with that though.
Any thoughts please Nick?
Regards, Sean
