Title: Firmware 1.17.2 - Bricked my lens !!
Post by: elwood on August 25, 2017, 05:48:39 AM
I just wanted it to try out the new firmware but I think made a big mistake.

As a Leica user, I never or nearly ever used autofocus, except with my Leica Q few times.

Well I after the last update, my lens seems to be blocked all the way out.
I tried the new tiny focus points and it made a noise, like if it was struggling to get to focus.

Since then, I cannot focus no more. AF nor MF is working.

Any clue?

I removed the battery, the lens but still blocked.

I knew autofocus wasn't made for me  :'(

Well, that is a bad thing you are reporting here.
I hope it is not the same issue that Leica had with their firmware update when the AF engine in the S2 lenses broke down.
I have used the X1D camera today with the electronical shutter and also found a few things that are not right.

Another user reported that the autopower off did not work and his camera was rather warm when taking it out of the bag.

So some homework to be done by the guys over there in Sweden!

John

p.s. After reading your story here, I went back to 1.17.0 (yes this is possible!) as I do not want to take the risk of damaging my lens!

Thanks John ;)

I tried to roll back to 1.17.0 but same problem here.

The lens seems to be jammed. There's no movement and nothing happened whether I press half way the shutter button or manually focus it.

Here's a video I just made. Hopefully it will help

Did you try taking the lens off and remounting it?

My update works fine on the 45mm

Yes I did it a few times.

I only have the 45mm so I can't test with another lens  :'(

So sorry Elwood. Don't Panic!
Did you re-update the lens firmware?

I did re-update both, body and lens.

I can hear a little noise whenever I try focusing manually but nothing moves.

Lucky me I've another dji's toy to play with  ;D  ;D

That's pretty frightening for sure.

Out of curiosity, is your 45 lens an early one, or did you get it more recently?
I don't know if they're all the same, or if they have made adjustments along the way.... it seems they have with the bodies at least.

Is there a way to know it ?
I bought both body and lens 3 weeks ago

I haven't had the chance to shoot it that much yet as we had a shitty weather in Paris and I was waiting for my Lee filters kit.

To me it looks like I have to send it back to Hasselblad as the lens is not responding at all. I can't even focus nor take any picture.
What a mess!!

But still in love this camera. Can't wait to travel the world  ;)

How can I get in touch with Hasselblad ? Is there any contact in France?

The time needed for answering and repairment is important, not the time needed for answering only  ;D

Too bad there's not another lens around so you can at least see if the issue is with the camera or the lens

Thanks.
I will give it a try as soon as my batteries are fully charged again.
I tried something similiar Hasselblad  customer support asked me to do earlier today.

I'll let you know

Still the same.

It did not work  :'(

I tried it with 2 fully charged batteries. I guess I have to send it for repair which it's a shame as I have my gear for a couple of days :( :(

As this lens failure from Elwood seems to be the only one that has been reported after people have updated their firmware to 1.17.2 I have decided to give it again a try and update from 1.17.0.to .2
I like very much the smaller AF points, that allow me to better focus on people's eyes.
The electronical shutter will be useful when using the X1D in full sunlight, but under normal circumstances I will stay with the leaf shutter.

I thought about rolling back off the update too after reading Elwood's posts, but opted to be brave and forge forward.

I had a house guest last week, a model visiting the US from South Africa, so I shot a few dozen shots with her in the studio with the x1d (no electronic shutter of course since was using studio lights) and it all went well. Just one case of the usual "Press shutter button halfway for live view" message which requires a battery removal to clear. I did a bunch of B&W bodyscape type shots, which is a real test for the dynamic range... and was quite pleased with the results.

And yes, the smaller AF points are quite important... not sure I'll ever have a reason to switch back to the bigger AF points... I'm not even sure what within the square the camera decides to focus on.

A friend of mine dropped off this morning my camera + lens to Hasselblad's office in Paris.

Can't wait to know what happened. ;D

Hopefuly it won't take too much time to send it back.

Did anyone tried the electronic shutter ?

I thought that 3 weeks of wait for a Leica repair service was too long, now I know that it wasn't ...

I just had this same thing happen to my XCD 45mm, but it was on the newest firmware (0.5.6). Did you ever figure out what the issue was with the lens? Hoping it's not dead for good.

Hi Chadkirkland

I just got a brand new lens from Hasselblad.
They have no clues what the issue was.
It took 3 months to get a lens back though :'(

Let us know if you get something from you issue
Good luck
