Title: Which variable ND filter for 35-90 to buy?
Post by: PeterDorr on October 19, 2013, 08:58:41 PM
Going to the desert for a holiday.
Will need a variable ND filter to manage the light.
Any experience/recommendation which one is best?

Thanks  a lot
Peter

Peter,

I have used two different makes.
The Lightcraft variable NDs are hopeless. I use a Heliopan which is very good and for the price should be.
I think this is worth reading:

Thanks Paul,

But neither Tiffen nor Heliopan provide a 95 mm which I believe I need for my 35-90 mm lens?

Oh, I did not realise that. I use the 82mm heliopan with Canon lenses for video.
I hope you find one.

Hey gang,

I was looking for a 95mm variable ND for my 28mm and the only one I could find with decent optics (stats at least - have not gotten one yet) is by Formatt/HiTech.  https://www.formatt-hitech.com/en/product/30-98~105mm-Multistop-Fader   I've used their grads on other cameras and they are very good, much better than the Cokins.  The variables are proper circular polarizers in opposition to achieve the variable functionality.  They don't do a 95mm but make a 105mm and there are numerous step rings available on the web.  A bit outside your specific question but hopefully of some help.

A couple of years ago I had a 58mm MKII version that I tested on a Canon 90mm TSE. In my opinion it degraded the IQ to an unacceptable level.
Since then they have brought out a Pro version that might be an improvement?
