Hi MGrayson,

Thanks for that. I have tried moving the focusing ring both ways and for a considerable number of turns. There is no change to the image - either becoming less blurry or more blurry. I have also noticed when I put my ear to the lens and turn the zoom ring I hear two clicks - when zooming in it happens at around the 70mm mark, when zooming out it happens around the 40mm mark.

Any advice?

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Paul

This lens is focus-by-wire. The focus ring will turn forever, as it is not physically attached to the focusing mechanism. Did you try turning the ring the other way, too? It might have been maxed out at one end of focus travel, but you'd get no feedback from the focus ring.

(I hate focus-by-wire. Mostly because the response is non-linear. Moving the ring slowly makes extremely fine focus adjustments. You'd think that this was good, but if you overshoot a bit and try to move back, and you move the ring slightly faster, the focus point will jump and you'll have to start over. Rocking back and forth across perfect focus is very difficult.)

Quote from: pb on May 12, 2024, 09:33:41 PMGood morning all,

I have just read this thread with interest. There seems to be a mix between referring to 'DRIVE to infinity' and 'FOCUS on infinity' which, being relatively new to Hasselblad is causing me some confusion. I understand the principle of DRIVE to infinity in relation to focus bracketing.

My question - is there an option within the AF mode to enable the lens to FOCUS on infinity? (Independent of the focus bracketing).

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Paul
Yes. It's an option under button customization.

My first copy of the XCD 28P was soft, and I'd never before had an optically bad new MF lens. (My first Fuji GF 250/4 had a bad aperture control ring). I hope it's teething problems of a new lens line and not a sign of lower QC in general.

Quote from: o2mpx on May 12, 2024, 08:14:31 AMFor key HB photos, running through Phocus and output into tiff for full color retention before using Luminar Neo to finalize is current approach. For others, running through Adobe DNG Converter, output into DNG for Luminar Neo is workflow; fully understand those HB files will not have all adjustments intact, albeit they are not far out of whack.

Luminar Neo is mostly devoted to special effects. I've tried it, and don't like it, but it's my personal feeling.
Converting HB files into DNG results in a loss of colours, some of them being completely out.
The best way to keep HB colours is to use Phocus and convert files into TIFF, but TIFF files are not as flexible as RAW's as far as adjustments are concerned, and you should go with Phocus fot the whole process, and use Photoshop for finalizing TIFF processing, when needed.
The other way is to use Lightroom : there are indeed very small differences in colours for images taken at the limit (such as with various illuminants), but I can't see any difference for most of my files (for me, it's more then 95%). And Lightroom is better than Phocus, as many tools are missing or are less performing in Phocus than in Lightroom.

Could your results be due to slight focus shift?

X1D/X2D Cameras / XCD 3,5-4,5/35-75 - faulty foc...

Good morning,

I have just ventured into Hasselblad and received a second hand XCD 35-75 lens. Yesterday when shooting with the XD2 and the lens I noticed that the lens does not appear to focus manually - when I set the camera to MF and I turn the focusing ring the image never gets sharp. Also the ring seems to constantly turn (i.e. it doesn't stop when it reaches its focusing limit). It focuses with no problems in AF.

As this is my first venture into Hasselblad I just want to ask if I am missing something before I look at returning the lens to the seller?

Many thanks.

Kind regards,

Paul

The XCD 25mm f/2.5V is going back to B&H tomorrow and not something, after too many lenses to count, that I have done. Let me explain why and please don't take this as anything more than an n=1 opinion. Comparisons included the XCD 21mm f/4 and 38mm f/2.5, on or off a RRS tripod, auto or manual focus, VR on or off, and camera was zoomed from the 38mm to 25mm to 21mm on my feet to the same relative image sizes as I would in RL. I judged sharpness largely at infinity of a landscape with wood and brick structures near the edges. The amazing 21mm lens was sharp f4 - f8 center and edges and as Vieri Bottazzini said in his blog "draws as beautifully as any ... if not better". The 38mm f/2.5 held its own compared to the 21mm when stopped down a bit to f4.

All good so far, but the 21mm f/2.5 was soft in the center and edges and remained so until f/8 and even then never equaled the 21mm or 38mm for sharpness try as I might to eliminate any errors in focusing, vibration, etc. Everything else about the the new 25mm is great; build quality, focus clutch I love, color, freedom from flare, and zero chromatic aberration. Maybe I had a poor copy or maybe the XCD 21mm and newer XCD 38mm set the bar too high. If there are more positive reviews, I may try another copy. Cheers

Thanks for everyone's comments. I would imagine the more telephoto you get, the face detect will work better. I was wondering about at the other end with the 25v and it being better glass? and faster lens vs the 28P. It seems you have to be uncomfortably close with a wide angle for the face detect feature to kick in
