Focus Stacking

I've been playing with focus stacking and as a large format photographer, I like the results - different but nice. I've read the manual, looked at several videos and sites but wonder why f8 is used as well. I get the optimum sharpness discussion but would you require less steps at f4.5? If we use the 1/3-2/3 general rule it seems like this would be correct. That said, using f11 and more steps should result in more "slices" each with excellent sharpness. Is f8 what everyone has settled on simply due to sharpness?
