Hi to all,

should anyone come across  back-up systems from ONNTO ( DataTale ) keep away from them,
those are dangerous pieces of crap.

it is risky to recomend any backup system, but I'll get the four bay Drobo...

I was a big fan of the Drobo concept but have since heard a bunch of horror stories. If the controller board fails you will be unable to get to your data until you gat a new one. I believe the safest way is to make multiple simple clones of data.

What would you recommend?
Drobos?

Na

Just use bare SATA drives in a 2, 4 or 6bay unit and get a back up routine going it's so easy on a Mac,  we have a couple of Wiebietech 4 bay units using 1TB drives, units connect via eSATA cable to computer and I can even use them with my pre unibody 17" MBP

Nick,

Just about any RAID 5 unit is going to have that problem. I have had a Linksys NSS4000 for a couple of years and the same applies to it. I am on the third one now, having had two replaced under warranty. I have started using My Book Studios which support RAID 1 and let you swap out a drive if one fails. $A500 for 1TB RAID1 or 2TB JBOD
Cheers,

Jeff

I agree Jeff
This is why I don't recommend RAID but rather simple clones of drives. Macgurus also recommend this process.
Currently I run Time Machine and retrospect together and have a 5 bay that I'm waiting to connect to the MacPro for clones (need that new sonnet driver).

Hi Nick

Depending which Sonnet card you have new drivers have been released for "Tempo SATA E2P and Tempo SATA ExpressCard/34 host controllers running Mac OS X. This version fixes an issue in Macintoshes with greater than 2GB of memory. This version also adds Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) support."
