I'm planning to pick up a MBP 17" with SSD next week.  This thing better fly, but it sounds encouraging from what folks have said recently.

Never envisioned myself using a MAC, but i guess a hassy will do that to a man.

You might want to consider the 15" Macbookpro.  Its size and weight makes it more portable and after using my son's 15" it doeen't seem that much smaller than my 17".  And when you put it in a camera case along with MFD gear and lenses, weight becomes an issue.  Just a thought.

Same advice here plus another consideration that I always try to keep in mind.

I have always used a 15" which never gave me troubles tethering. I could drain my battery completely with the 15" without so much of a hickup of the back. I have seen more than 1 complain about the 17" giving problems tethering when the battery was below 50%! I have to admit these problems were all with Leaf backs but nonetheless apparently the 17" delivers just a bit less power on its firewire port than the 15". These problem cases were virtually all while running on the battery only.

Maybe the 17" doesn't have this issue anymore at this moment with the current generation of backs. I simply did not want to take that chance.

Worthy advice indeed. I've always been on 17"s and having 1920x1200 is important to me. However, if it means less power, i'll need to look into that. Investigating if i can find that information anywhere. Hopefully someone else can clarify it.

It's interesting, one place specifies 7 watts on the 17", the other specifies nothing for the 15".

I have an i7 17", 512MBVRAM, SSD drive mac. Works fantastically.

Hi Dick

Check out http://www.macupgrades.co.uk/store/machine.php?name=macbook-pro17

however with the latest unibody MBP changing hard drive should be a user installable just clone existing to SSD using Superduper (from Shirt Pocket)

Crucial http://www.crucial.com/uk/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=B4B1B2BFA5CA7304

were offering kits but it should slot into a 2.5" dock so you can format using Disk Utilities and transfer Clone of System drive then just replace HDD with the SSD

unfortunately I have a pre unibody MBP where replacing HDD is more problematic

Hi Dick

I did the upgrade using Apple's Time Machine backed up to a Lacie firewire drive.  Putting the new drive in is very easy and restoring your system is also easy.  Simply boot from the Apple System DVd and choose the restore option from the menu.

You will ike using an SSD in the Macbook Pro as it is (a) quiet and (b) much faster.

Thanks, but ...do I really want to pay £400 to reduce my hard disc capacity?

Yes you do , If you value a system that works snappy with Phocus. Naturally you can also spend 1200USD on a 400/500Gb SSD but a 240/256 is totally sufficient. If you really need more you can replace the DVD drive or use external storage.

BTW. the pre-unibody MBP is also a breeze to replace the HDD. You only have to undo more screws and remember where they came from. Granted the Unibody it is REALLY easy.

I see it is even closer to 1600USD.

I took the 240Gb for my MacPro (OS & Applications) and a 256Gb for my MBP (Crucial).
