Phocus tether works without an issue as long as it does not sit unused for an hour or more. Error code requires camera restart to continue. The back itself is warm to the touch. My question is: is this a normal occurrence? Does the tether cable need to be disconnected if I don't plan to use it for a couple of hours?

No this is not normal, not quite sure what is going on here. The only thing I will see after leaving the camera for a while is the camera powering down to save battery...
