Title: Your suggestions for new accessories and lenses.
Post by: David Grover on November 17, 2011, 11:11:58 AM
Hi Forum,

I have been asked to put these two questions out there so that they we get a better understanding of what you guys think would improve the system even more or bring better functionality to your daily workflow.

- Which accessory would you most like to have for the H-system camera?
- If there is one lens you would really like to see for the H-system camera, which one would it be?

I will relay all the ideas you come up with back to HQ for evaluation.

Cheers

Something wider than the 28... a 21 perhaps??

- A fast 50mm f1.8 or even f 1.4 or... f1.2
- An improved external cord release with lock (a bit like nikon MC-36 with internal timer etc...)
- A more robust Pro shade
- A good fitting rain/sand cover for the H-Series
- A H series bellow
- A slide copy holder for H series

and off record
- focus distance indicator in viewfinder
- battery indicator on H back (always visible like iPhone)

Auto sensor cleaning like every DSLR these days, and a built in GPS. Actually, I can live with the GIL but it drives me nuts the way it can drain a battery if it loosens a little.

a metered 45 degree viewfinder, this could adjust to higher angle too and rotate like the Rollei ones did.

Autobellows to take the HC 4/120 to higher magnifications (than approx 2x allowed with stacking all 3 tubes) and will allow some tilt/shift. Wonder if is will need to redesign the 120 macro to cast a wider image circle.

Current HTS insufficient for table top macro, and theoretically doesnt support HC4/120. And dislike the built in optics.

It's christmas soon!

my wishlist:

* a fisheye with 180°

* and a tele lens like the old 500mm apotessar

* an electronic tilt-compensation implemented in phocus

and I support silvesterkok's off records
- focus distance indicator in viewfinder
- battery indicator on H back (always visible like iPhone)

Can you expand on that a little?  Why not use 80mm plus extension tube?

I would like more tilt for table top macro. Say 20 deg.

Yes 80+ extensions will work on HTS but limited magnification. And IQ through 120 is better than 80.

Btw, possible to stack 2x HC52 for higher magnification?

Subject distance is available in the EXIF data. What technical hurdle is there ?

- A wider wide to go with the HTS. 43 mm just isn't wide enough.
- Focus confrmation with the HTS
- L-bracket (or equivalent) that works with the HTS and in portrait orientation.

Depends how accurate you want it to be Silvester!  Answer is... it would not be accurate enough to display in the viewfinder.

Mostly what others have requested. A wider wide (HTS compatible of course),  450mm+ that is also teleconverter friendly, a remote release that is sturdy and ideally has a 90 deg plug so it works with HTS, and some means of keeping dust and other stuff in the camera body and away from sensor. Perhaps your own personal "Borrower" with an antistatic cloth!
Oh and a 45-90 deg metered viewfinder. And an L bracket that is GIL user friendly (probably more a RRS or Kirk issue not a Hasselblad problem).
Looking forward to the outcome of this survey.
Regards
Richard

Maybe I am a little aggressive here, but why not?  If Leica can go from making M series cameras, why can't Hasselblad go in the direction of the M series digital cameras?  The difficulty in obtaining a current M series camera or any M series lens is a testament to their desirability and popularity.  All of us who carry the weight associated with Hasselblad, sometimes long for a smaller format when the occasion arises.  Yes, we can go Canikon, but I think the devotees of the M series digital could go that route, too, but they do not.  Leica is making a boat load of money with that series camera, and I think Hasselblad could too.  The camera could be a rangefinder with a full frame 35 mm or maybe just a bit larger so that the pixel size could be larger, therefore allowing more mega pixels.  It could have a digital finder and live view on the display.  In fact, it could be a totally radical departure of which we could only dream.  Make us even happier by having an industrial designer give us a beautiful instrument.  It is amazing how sexy you can make a camera look, especially to us gear hounds.

When Leica introduced the S series they were relying on their heritage of quality to produce new customers, and Hasselblad could do that as well.  With the narrow market of MFD, it seems like a natural process to go in some other direction to expand markets.  This could be just what is needed for Hasselblad to survive, especially if the near 40 mega pixel 35mm DSLRs come to fruition in the near future.  Yes, I know 35 mm DSLRs still would not give the quality found in the MFD sensors of today, but what else they have up their sleeves is yet to be seen.  My desire (quite selfishly) is for the MFD market to continue, and especially for Hasselblad to continue.

Greg, I have no inside knowledge and there's no reason why I should have any such knowledge, but I'd be surprised if Hasselblad didn't introduce a smaller more 'mainstream' camera in the not too distant future.

Keith,

You are absolutely on target, but a little prodding from current customers couldn't hurt.  (Surely they monitor HDF.)  The new format for Hasselblad is something I sincerely desire, and, as you said, is something that is consistent with common sense.  Thanks for the affirmation.

HLArt,

Make your own!

Maplin Electronic stores in the UK do a 1.5mm to 2.5mm stereo jack hat we use with pocket wizards to fire up to 5 cameras.

Has the advantage of allowing you to be well away from the camera when you trigger it.

Cost of the cable - £1.99

First item on my list is like a broken record that I play every year ...

A Focal plane H body for shutter speeds to 1/4000th !!!!! ... with a switch to use the HC lenses in Leaf shutter mode when desired.  Just like the 200 series V cameras did. That would kill anything coming from Phase One before it even got here.

This would also let you use lenses like the 110/2FE, 300/2.8 TeleAPO, and 180/4CFE with the a simple adapter.

Others:

A simple tripod collar for the bigger lenses like the 120 Macro and Zooms ... if necessary, sub-contract it out to Really Right Stuff, they'll do a terrific job.

A flip magnifier for fine manual focus control ... especially when using the HTS/1.5. ... have Bright Screen make this one for Hasselblad, they did a terrific job making ones for the V series cameras.

A 45º metered finder.

Remake the 80mm as a f/1.8 or f/2 lens like Contax/Zeiss did. The HC-80/2.8 is a low value item ... I suspect people have one because it came in the bundle, then get a 100/2.2 and never use the 80. Probably why you can buy one used in great condition for $800. f/1.8 would make it more useful and valuable.

Improve the capacity of the grip battery ... that is over-due.

Get rid of the 50 year old proprietary quick release on the base and go to an Arca release base plate which is the industry standard for most serious work.  I replaced the base cover on my Leica M9s with ones from Really Right Stuff that have an Arca grove cut in them ... for occasional monopod use.

Make the FW800 port like the one on the CFV which is recessed and has a little spring loaded door which helps secure the cord better.

-Marc

The grip batteries are almost ridiculous:  the don't have much capacity, yet they take forever to charge.  Greatly improve those two aspects of the grip battery and I'd be much happier.

I would totally immediately buy 2 things. No... I will order them right now and I want to be the first to have them.

1) H4D80 (It might be a H5 too) as an upgrade for my CF39MS. I get too much moire still with the H4D60.

2) A zoom lens that has a constant aperture and doesn't have T-stop value variation the moment you start zooming in or out. This sounds like an odd wish but I regularly have to photograph items from the same perspective that are varying in size, eg. I have to zoom. Every time I do so I need to adjust my lighting too. It is just 10ths of stop but the lens's T-stops vary with the zoom. This applies to the 35-90 as well as the 50-110 (less). I want a lens that does not have this.

I've never noticed this with my zoom, I wonder if it has anything to do with "True Exposure":

Hmmm... this happens when I work in 'repro mode'. Focus, exposure, light, everything is fixed. The only thing I sometimes vary is the focal length. Try doing this with your 35-90 and you will find that there is over half a stop of variation within the zoom range (naturally I am not talking wide open ;), this happens at f11/f16 as well).

After reading the doc it might indeed be the True Exposure function that is bugging me. I will check this. See what happens if cameras start doing the thinking for you?!?! Grr.... I will get back to you guys this weekend. I have another shoot lined up where this can be tested pretty good.

If it is TF that is causing this I will have saved me about 6K Euros :)

So my order is still: 1) H4D80 :)
Title: Re: Your suggestions for new accessories and lenses.
Post by: Dustbak on February 01, 2012, 10:43:50 AM
Well, getting back to you guys. TF definitely does not have something to do with it. It is turned off and still I get this. With the 35-90 more so than the 50-110. Odd thing is that when I zoom in or out and alter the f-stop (and back) the t-stop issue is less. Like the diaphragm blades are a bit sticky. Maybe this has got the do with the body being upside down with the lens facing downwards. Both the 35-90 as well as the 50-110 show this. The 35-90 worse so.

Weird...
Title: Re: Your suggestions for new accessories and lenses.

It is definitely not True Exposure!  Don't switch it off.  It will keep the exposure more constant for sure.

Ill ask about the T-stop variation.

Only Kirk and RRS to my knowledge, and both require an Arca Swiss mount. And FWIW, there are major differences between these two - Kirk's mounts fore & aft, RRS mounts L & R. Kirk's covers many of the ports on the left side of the camera, RRS does not. Kirk's is about $30 US cheaper.

Granted, but the Arca Swiss mounting system is so universally accepted. Plus, the "L" brackets made by each company are custom made for a specific cameral AND model. So either one fits securely over your Hassy mounting plate, one for the V, and one for the H. Once in place, you are now ready for anything with Arca Swiss mounts. And if you don't want an "L" bracket, both companies make regular camera plates also, but again, in the Arca Swiss mount.

Not to mention, if you shoot multi-camera brands, it makes a big difference in convenience if they all have the same QR system attached.

This was an old wish list of mine"

1) An 8mm extention ring (thinner than the 13mm anyway).
2) 180mm lens. I often find 150 too short, 210 too long. Besides that the 210 is also to slow with autofocus to do full lenght portrait work.

4) Enhanced design of the rubber eyepiece of the viewfinder. Take a look at the mouth piece of a scuba regulator. An indentation at the viewfinder, a ridge in which the rubber piece falls secured with a tie-rib or a clip.

Of these I have got.

1) An 8mm extention ring. Check! Even better the new macro adapter functions like an 8 mm extention ring but apparently optically better. I should be receiving this somewhere this month.
2) 180mm lens, NOPE not yet.
3) Export of multiple layered PSD files with moire reduction at once. I have got that however it is still limited to 25maximum and they all need to have noise reduction on. This is on its way but still in progress.
4) Enhanced design of the rubber eyepiece. Got that too but I need to get a H5D for that :)

All in all, things are improving slowly but gradually.

It would be fantastic to be able to change the F/stop or the shutter speed on my cable remote release.

1. Lenses with optical stabilization
2. H6D possibility to have 1/2000 s with ALL lenses (it should be possible with this kind of sensor - P1 as far as I know managed 1/4000 s using sensor possibilities (?) ) - I know this is not an accessory, but it would be a nice feature :)
3. Long, bright zoom with stabilization - equivalent to 70-200 in full frame.

1. Lenses with image stabilisation or (even better) a sensor with image stabilisation!!!
2. Higher autofocus speed!!
3.An optically improved HC 35 mm. (On par with the 24 and the 28 regarding optical quality.)
4. A faster and better HC 2.0/80mm and a 2.0/120mm, both fully usable wide open.
(Ask Zeiss to scale up their Otus-line for medium format, but please with autofocus!)
5. A 5.6 or 6.4/500mm with Autofocus.

The 24 and 28 HCD lenses are made for smaller sensors (Not the new 100MP). With the new larger sensors, those lenses are not optimal. I would like Hasselblad to make new HC lenses to replace the old HCD. I understand they are focusing on the X1D system now but the H6D needs attention as well.

"Not optimal"  Agreed.  However, if you go into Phocus and look at what is cropped it is "very minimal".  The cost and likely additional size of a new lens that is optimal for the 100 sensor really does not make sense to me.

It is not just what is cropped. When Canon put a 50 MP sensors not all lenses where going to take advantage of that sensor and that is why Canon made a list. Hasselblad made all HCD lenses for a smaller sensor than 100 MP. What about later for 200MP? Or a 6x6 sensor? Hasselblad needs to keep up with the time. The same thing can be said for the Gil GPS! The H6D should have a GPS already incorporated without the absurdity of the Gil, I use my Garmin watch and Lightroom to geotag my photos, it is just more unneeded workflow.

And at least in the meantime - data transfer of movements and subsequent lens corrections when using the existing HTS1.5 + H-X adapter
