Hi,

I am looking for a used H3D or H4D with 22, 39 or 40Mp back.. If anybody is selling one, I will greatly appreciate your offerings.

Also, I was recently offered a H3D-22 with 120mm F/4 for 12,900 USD. The guy said that old 22Mpix sensor behaves better than a new 40Mpix because the latter is cropped and has smaller pixels. Also he claimed that his 22Mp back was calibrated together with the body. My thought was that a back does not require any calibration, is that correct?

I did not find a lot of information about the 120mm F/4 lens. Perhaps their strong side should be macro.. Weak side - aperture.. Anything else? The price of 120 is the same as for 100 F/2.2, and the latter is considered as a very descent lens.

I am also a bit concerned paying almost 13,000 USD for a discontinued camera which is two generations old. My gut feels I shall be able to find a newer system for the same budget, what do you guys think?

Thank you in advance for your answers,

Kind regards,
Roman

the Pro Centre in London has a good amount of ex-rental and second hand H gear. They would be worth a look, if nothing else they can give you an idea of what you should be paying.

Regarding the 120mm lens, in my experience it is most useful as a macro lens. The 120mm is a physically big lens, the auto-focus is slow (the slowest of all H lenses?), and as you point out the max aperture is less than the 100mm. Obviously it depends on what you're shooting but for anything other than macro, i'd prefer the 100mm!

good luck,

alex.

Hi Roman,

Wanted to answer your question about the calibration of the digital back and body;

Starting with the H3 platform, the H3 body and digital magazine where calibrated together at the factory as the two connected with each other that is unique and unlike another body/magazine hardware combination.

The single benefit from this calibration is real-time lens focus adjustment as the camera compensates for the current aperture and modifies the focus of the lens to place the imaging plane directly on the surface of the sensor (because the protective glass plate acts as another lens element that will diffract the light rays based on aperture of the lens.)

The take-away, is that you would be able to use the digital magazine on another H3 or H4 body, you just would not get the real-time focus adjustment b/c the calibration capability is missing.

Additionally, the H3D 22MP sensor is indeed slightly larger than the 31 & 40MP sensors, but a moot point in practical photographic application - the 31 records more data so when viewing the final image @ 100% zoom between the two sensors, the difference is negligible.

Buying used does not preclude you from taking advantage of future Hasselblad trade-in promotions; the value of the camera is preserved for you as a second or third owner just as well as if you were the first owner.

You can see the trade-in chart here

Good success in your hunting!
