I have a 35-90 and a 100. I would now need a longer portrait lens (around 150mm).
What should be the best alternative in term of versality vs. quality: the HC150N or a HC80 + a H1.7X converter?

I used HC100 + H1.7, the quality is good but it focuses slower than HC150

What about image quality using the 1.7 converter?

The converter plus 100mm (and 80) is much more prone to losing contrast, especially with backlighted situations or when you are shooting on white for instance. In that case the 150 should be your best choice (unless fairly flat is what you are aiming for).
