1.7 convertor versus tilt/shift

Hi
I know it isn't recommended but the results that I am getting with the tilt shift, using it as a 1.5 convertor on a 210mm lens have much better corner sharpness than the 1.7 convertor which has soft edges. Wondering if this is the case normally or do I have a faulty convertor?

Hi Shaun,
Photographs that I make with the 1.7x are tack sharp corner to corner.
Kind regards,
Derek

Got it from new but never really used it as I presumed it to be too soft at the corners. When I say soft I mean soft enough to have to crop in 20% or so. Out of warranty now wish i'd posted here earlier.
Thanks
Shaun
