I'm new to this forum. Now that the H3D2-31 has come down in price I'm looking at adding a Medium format for Landscape work. I use a Better Light scan back in the studio for capturing Fine Art originals but I'm not crazy about taking that system outdoors. Any reason to stay away from the 31 meg? Any difference in the image quality vs the 39 meg. I'll be doing inkjet prints in the 20x30 to 40x60 inch range. Any help you can give is appreciated.

I haven't used the 31, so can't comment on the output, but from the specs the two things to note are:

1. It's a smaller sensor than the 22 or 39 so your wide angle lenses will be a bit less wide which might be important for landscape work
2. The sensor has microlenses so (I believe) won't give good results if the back is used on a large format camera with any kind of movement.

The offer thats on at the moment's an icredible deal though!

Hope this helps!

roberts answer sounds a tad negative imho.

yes, the 31mp back is not designed to be shifted.

but the microlens design gives a one stop higher sensitivity than the 22 and 39mp back. this means you should get iso 400 with the quality of iso 200 (compared to the 22 and 39mp models).

all the others benefits of medium format digital (higher DR with a more film-like rendition, a lack of an AA-filter gives much better detail) are also available in the H3D31.

having an H3D39 vI i find the actual offer for the H3D31 a hell of a deal.

Hi,

I hadn't meant to sound negative so apologies if it came across that way, and thanks Bernd for pointing out the positives.

On the question of shifts, I took a look at the product brochure and it seems to indicate that you can use it on a LF camera. I'm sure that wasn't the original position but maybe it's been tested now and works ok.

Even more interestingly though Hasselblad has announced new pricing across the entire range, with mentions of 40% price decreases so maybe worth checking out the new prices before commuting.
