Hello:

I own a 528C back on a 553ELX camera.  It produces wonderful images (when properly focused, which can be challenging) with nice rich creamy color and plenty of detail.

However, in order to have autofocus and utilize the latest technology, I am considering a move up to an H4D-31 or a used, cheaper system (like H3D-XX)

Will I be loosing this quality and look?  The 528C has these big 9 micron pixels and although there are lots of debates on the relative merits of pixel size on the net, I was wondering if moving up to a denser sensor will give me more resolution but a lifeless image.  I am also wondering if the image rendering of the H-lenses would be different than the the Zeiss lenses (I would expect them to be sharper for sure).

What do you think?
Thanks in advance and happy new year

Hi Evangelos, you will have more keepers because the AF system of the H is way superior to human focussing skills on a ELX/D/M etc. I really love the 528/384/132c/96c backs and must admit that in studio at 50/100 iso not even my 50Mp back convinces me that backs became better over all these years. Only my 39M/S is better than the 9 micron backs, in fact even way better than my 50Mp when used in MS mode.H lenses are incredibly good, sharp, detailed and great to use. When it comes to rendering, the kind of lighting and post processing has much more influence on the image than a lens can have ( at least a modern lens).
